Nashville Skyline Rag

If the listener didn’t get the idea that Dylan had gone country from the duet with Johnny Cash on the first track, this second track certainly did the trick. This picking-and-grinning instrumental would have fit right in on Hee-Haw, a very popular, very cornball TV show that starred country legends, Roy Clark and Buck Owens.

There’s not too much to say about this one. It’s perfectly fine, precisely played by the expert session players hired for Nashville Skyline. Each instrument takes a star turn: harp, steel guitar, dobro, acoustic guitar, and piano. Dylan plays the harp, of course. Charlie Daniels played guitar on this track, and Pete Drake played pedal steel guitar. Norman Blake was on the dobro.

Dylan earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Music Instrumental. He lost to Nashville Brass With Danny Davis.

He has never played it live.
